Adrien English is attractive, successful and gay. But life changes for Adrien when his boyhood friend is murdered and Adrien becomes the cops' prime suspect. Soon Adrien realizes jail may be the least of his problems. First someone ransacks his shop, then the phone calls begin: "Adrien, I'm going to kill you..."

WELCOME TO A NEW GAY LA SLEUTH!

According to the cover of this book FATAL SHADOWS is the first in a new series of Los Angeles murder mysteries featuring Adrien English. Mr. English, who has "heart problems" both physical (tremors) and emotional (near celibacy), owns a small Pasadena book store which has the largest collection of gay and gothic mysteries in Los Angeles.
The mystery begins with him becoming the chief suspect in the brutal murder of his life long friend and temporary employee, Robert Hersey. Naturally, (and isn't this always the case) one of the detectives gives him heart tremors (in more ways than one).
Soon he finds out that other friends and former classmates are being killed or are already dead. It's obvious that he is the next one on the killer's stab list. Thinking that the police are more interested in proving he is the killer rather than discovering who really is, he sets out to unmask the murderer himself.
Adrien, his lifestyle and his world provide interesting possibilities for a new mystery series. I enjoyed Lanyon's witty writing very much and I look forward to future books. However, the author is not well served by the sloppy editing and/or production of the book. I was annoyed by what seemed to be strange typos until I realized that the non-words were really parts of two other words that had been joined together leaving out several lines of the story. It seems that someone should be proofreading the galleys a little closer if they want this series to get off the ground. Actually, I'm my own worst proofreader, so I usually have a friend do it.

In my top five percent...

Josh Lannyon writes in an even, unpretentious, relaxed style. There is very good character development, ingenuity of plot, believability, dialogue, and pacing.
I read mystery 90 minutes per day, year in and year out, and I can say that "Fatal Shadows" rates easily in my top five percent.
In-context humor is also important to my enjoyment. It demonstrates to me that the author has done careful in-depth thinking about his manuscript; it demonstrates his skill and his love of his work.
Consider these:
"...isn't this too much of a coincidence?" ... I thrust the `In Sympathy' card at Riordan. He read it. Turned it over. Handed it to Chan. Said gravely, "It's not a Hallmark."
I poured some brandy in my Ovaltine. Not bad. Next round I poured some Ovaltine in my brandy.
"How's the heart?" "Takes a licking, keeps on ticking."
"...I hadn't had a date in six months." "But --?" "No butts." He laughed. After a second it clicked and I laughed too. "Not on the first date anyway," agreed Bruce.
I look forward to the second in this series.

Yay - The First Adrien English Mystery Back in Print

Only Josh Lanyon would create a hero who drinks Ovaltine. Sure, he laces it with brandy , but still, how many readers these days even know what that is? What persons under a certain age also may not know is that for years, in the 1940's and 1950's, Ovaltine sponsored "Captain Midnight," one of the early "superheroes" on radio and TV. Just another example of the subtle and wry wit with which Lanyon draws his characters and shapes their snappy dialogue. For those who haven't read it, the story is also a suspenseful mystery and M/M romance. It's gratifying that this first installment of the wonderful four volume series is back in print with striking new cover art. For Lanyon newbies, this is a must.

Journey, a novel by James Michener, was expanded from a section originally cut from his large novel Alaska. The book depicts five men, one of whom was an English Lord, journeying in 1897-98 from Great Britain through Canada to Dawson, Yukon, for the gold rush taking place. According to the novel's afterword, the section was cut from the original book because Alaska already contained a chapter on the Alaskan side of the gold rush and that the chapter that eventually became Journey was irrelevant. It was decided that the chapter could stand on its own as a short novel, and Michener donated the Canadian royalty earnings from the novel to endow the Journey Prize, an annual Canadian literary award for the best short story published by an emerging writer.[1]

A Solid Offering in the James Patterson "Private" Series

I picked up the latest in the Private series by James Patterson in the airport in London and got through it in one pretty easy read on a Saturday while looking out at Hyde Park--a seemingly appropriate setting to read this book. Like most of Patterson's books, there are generally multiple stories going on in any one book. The primary story here is about a girl--Hannah Shapiro--who early in life watches unspeakable acts committed on her mother during a kidnapping. Later in life, she travels to London to attend school and her past seemingly follows her and it is up to Dan Carter who heads up Private's London office to save her. The story takes at least 3 very surprising turns and keeps you interested throughout. The second story that has to do with women being taken off the streets and human organs going missing is much less interesting and to be honest was somewhat convoluted. I don't think the reader will find it nearly as enthralling as the story about Hannah Shapiro. The books ends with a "renuion" of sorts and makes you wonder if there will be a follow up to Private London--although I tend to think not. Overall a good book very typical of the "Patterson genre."

There's a good story in there somewhere!

There is most definitely a good story in here somewhere but it is very poorly told. If this had been any other author I would have stopped reading ages ago but I kept on giving it a chance.

The novel started off as being more British than the British. Given it was set in London there was definitely a lot off effort put into making it sound tres Anglo-Saxon. I don't think people realize that the barriers that they believe exist between Americans and Brits are very grey. Nowadays language is becoming more international and frankly there were a few words at the start that I don't think even English coppers use anymore.

Next qualm: the two story lines - the one about the murdering wife of a "kiddie fiddler" and the other about the kidnapping had no link whatsoever and I failed to understand why they were in the same novel except as cushioning to make the story longer.

The main story line of the kidnap seemed miles too far-fetched for me. It was bizarre. Especially the linkage to Al Qaeda and Israel; the impressionable American girl whose mind is manipulated to make her believe she was sexually abused as a child... There is far too much in this and it failed to grab me like the first James Patterson I read (Now You See Her).

Overall, I wouldn't recommend this as a good read.

I am currently reading all of the "Private" books. Even though they have some of the same recurring characters, every one of the books can be stand alone reads. Interesting for me to see the mention of places I've been in London and Australia.
