We have been so overwhelmed with the tumultuous events which have occurred in the last few years, that we shall be astonished, on a calm retrospect, to observe what strides we have made in human progress, and how totally unconscious we have been of the magnitude and importance of the histoiy we have been making, and of the share each little hamlet has had in producing it. It is from the careful examination of the elements, that go to make up any desirable event, or result, that we are able to understand and duly appreciate it, and derive from it the lessons desirable for future use and improvement.

It will be our pleasing duty, then, to review the history of our ancient and honorable town, and gather for the use of ourselves, and those who shall succeed us in our pleasant abodes, in this val-



ley of valleys, and on these rejoicing hills, so favored of Heaven, the "remnants, that remain" of the treasures not discovered before tlie completion of our former enterprise, and to preserve them in the urchives of our local history, " that nothing may be lost." To accomplish this, the plan of the former work will be followed, recording, step by step, all further facts obtained, under the several heads employed before, sometimes repeating facts found in the first volume, for greater clearness of statement, and to save reference to another volume, so inconvenient in the reading of any work.

Although our country is so young, and our experience so recent, it is yet very difficult for us to picture to ourselves the novelty with which this Avilderness must have struck the early gaze of our forefathers, as they came here, " bearing the ark of their covenant into the wilderness." The land was all before them. They had full authority to enter and possess it, by solemn conveyance from the Indian proprietors, and by the full consent and endowment of the General Court, encumbered by no conditions, except to receive as many other "lionest inhabitants " into proprietorship with them, as the plantation would " conveniently entertain "—a matter of prime necessity in new and feeble communities. How does our most fertile imagination fail to grasp and comprehend the mingled emotions which must have struggled in the bosoms of our stiirdy forefathers, as, after a weary Avandering in the deep forests and beside the "great rivers," they stood upon the summit of "Good Hill," first local name selected and pronounced by their lips, in the new home, and gazed into the wild and beautiful valley, divided by its lovely, meandering river, seeking with the eye, even in this first moment of enraptured vision, the sequestered nooks in which they would build their happy, moral abodes, and erect their family altars, first offerings to their adorable God and Master, Like the land of Canaan to the Israelites of old, the new land was all before them, with its woods and rocks, and hills and streams—nameless as yet. Here were a thousand hills, valleys, streams, and beautiful local objects of eveiy form and style of loveliness, with no names by which they might be called; no appellation by which they might be described. They had bought land at "Pompe-raug;" they had been granted liberty by the General Court to found a new plantation there, and that was all there was of designation. What an excellent resource. Trina and company have nailed. This guide has the best resources, quotes and references for those teaching or sharing the George Albert Smith Curriculum for the LDS church. My wife teaches and was spending hrs looking for resource material each week. Now, we just turn to that lesson and follow the guide. great starter material

Since I became a relief society teacher, I have not gone without the helper book! It has great ideas, quotes, etc for all your lessons! One suggestion... Make the page behind the handouts blank, so if you need to tear it out to make a copy you don't miss out on the first page of the next lesson's helps.

I stumbled on this book at just the right time. I've been living in my mind (constant daydreaming, fantasing, etc.) since a traumatic event in my childhood. I didn't realize, that as the years went by, it was becoming more frequent and negatively effecting my real life. When relationships ended, to avoid the pain, i kept the relationships going in my head. It's supposed to be a pleasant escape but in REALITY i was letting this fantasy eat away at me. Mrs. Lue helped me see that i have been taking a few good qualities about someone and then letting my fantasy make them into this perfect person. When this "perfect" person rejects me i of course feel worthless. Truth is in reality these people i pine for aren't even worth my affection. Natalie Lue is teaching me how to WAKE UP and see, think and act realistically when it comes to love and loving myself. I recommend this book to everyone. Maybe most people don't dream as much as i do but thanks to Disney and romantic films, i think most of us have a false sense of reality when it comes to love.

For Anyone With an Online Romance

After a couple of abusive relationships, I now have a better understanding of the pitfalls I stumble into. I found this book at just the right time. I was looking for a stable relationship with someone who could love me, help me feel safe and happy. I thought I found that in a person I met through an online game. We texted, emailed and even talked on the phone. After a medical diagnosis, he just disappeared. It broke my heart because I thought we were great friends and now he wouldn't answer my calls, return texts or emails. I didn't understand why he would disappear when I needed a friend the most. With the help of this book, I realize he wasn't the person I was hoping he was. I realize that I can make myself happy with someone that I can meet and someone that is willing to live with me in reality instead of all the "some day's" or "when's". Although it is difficult, with the help and advice in this book, I'm moving on. I know that by the time I feel better physically that I will be much stronger emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

If you find yourself "crushing" on an unavailable person, co-worker or you think you've met the perfect guy online, find yourself selling yourself short while you let someone else use your time to decide what you should do ... this book is for you. It won't be an automatic fix and will require some change inside yourself, after all ... if we aren't' willing to change, we will fall into the same traps and pitfalls.

I know some have commented on the poor spelling and grammar, but if you need the help enough it shouldn't be a bother. I also enjoy well written grammar with correct spelling, but I think fixing me is far more important.

ABOUT THIS BOOK
This book is designed to help you strengthen the skills you will need to take the “Social Studies “ test of the General Educational Development (GED) Examination.

A Pre-Test section in the beginning of this book will help you assess the areas where you need to work the hardest. After you have completed the review areas and answered all of the drill questions, you will be given a Post-Test that will show your improvement in certain areas and show you which areas you still need to study. In the Post-Test section you will answer questions very similar to those you will face on the actual GED. The Pre-Test and Post-Test provide detailed explanations to all of the questions, illustrating not only why the correct answer choice was right, but also why the incorrect answer choices were wrong.

The reviews cover all areas tested on the Social Studies test of the GED examination. Sections on comprehending what you read, graphs and charts, reading patterns, and applying information are covered extensively. Each section contains a drill so you can monitor your progress as you use this book. By mastering the skills presented in this book, you will be able to approach the Social Studies test with confidence.

ABOUT THE GED
The GED is an examination for adults who did not complete high school and would like to earn a high school equivalency diploma. The exam is given by each state, which then issues a GED diploma. The GED is taken by adults who want or need a diploma for work, college, or personal satisfaction. Nearly 800,000 people take the GED each year.

The GED is broken into five tests: Language Arts: Writing; Social Studies; Science; Language Arts: Reading; and Mathematics. You are given a little more than seven hours to complete all five tests. There is a total of 240 multiple-choice questions and one essay question on the GED examination.

The Social Studies test on the GED has 50 multiple choice questions. You will have 70 minutes in which to answer questions based on a passage, graph, map, chart, or figure. The test consists of 40% history questions, 20% economics questions, 25% political science questions, and 15% geography questions. The test questions will deal 20% with evaluation, 30% with analysis, 30% with application, and 20% with comprehension.

The GED examination is administered by the GED Testing Service of the American Council of Education (ACE) and is developed by writers who have secondary and adult education experience. Because the GED test-takers come from such diverse backgrounds, the ACE makes sure the test writers are also diverse. Once the questions have been written, they are standardized according to a certain level of difficulty and content.

The GED comes in several versions to fit the special needs of its examinees. For example, there are Spanish, French, and Braille versions of the exam, as well as large-print and audio versions.

HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
Before you begin reading the chapter on comprehending what you read, take the Pre-Test at the front of this book. This Pre-Test will assess your current skills and indicate both your strengths and weaknesses.

This book is broken down into four sections, each dealing with a specific area of social studies: comprehending what you read, graphs and charts, reading patterns, and applying information. Each section includes exercises to help you develop your skills as well as skill-building practice exercises at the end of each section to reinforce what you have learned. There is also an appendix at the end of the book which includes a glossary of terms. The glossary includes a list of general terms that appear throughout the book that you might not be familiar with. Also included are United States and European History terms to prepare you for the GED.

It is best to move through this book chronologically because the “Comprehending What You Read “ section lays the foundation for the rest of the book.

Because social studies skills are developed and not simply a list of facts to learn, it is important to begin developing this skill as soon as possible. Cramming for this test on the GED simply will not help. It is also wise not to try to do too much in one study session. There is a large amount of information presented in this book, and it will take time to digest.

When you are finished with the review sections, take the Post-Test. Compare your Post-Test score with your Pre-Test score and see how much you have improved. You may even want to take the Pre-Test again to re-evaluate your skills.

Before you begin the Pre-Test, you should take inventory of your study skills. Under what circumstances do you study best? Are you most awake in the morning, late afternoon, or evening? Do you study best under bright light, or soft? With music, or in total silence? Answer these questions and then try to optimize your study time by creating the ideal learning conditions (the atmosphere in which you learn most efficiently). Also, you should set a specific schedule for yourself that takes into consideration your other commitments. Can you study one hour each morning? A half hour every night? Two or three hours on weekends? Pick a routine and stick to it so you will be confident when it’s time to take the exam.

Although you are encouraged to write in the margins of this book, you should know that you will not be allowed to mark up the texts on the actual GED examination. When you take the Post-Test, use a piece of scrap paper instead of writing in the margins of the book. This will help you be more comfortable with the actual test format.

Please note that the GED won’t penalize you for guessing wrong, so if you are stuck on a question, don’t leave it blank. Instead, eliminate any answers you know are not correct and choose one of the remaining options. You have a better chance of getting a question right by making an educated guess, and then you can move on to the next question. Remember, the exam is timed, so you do not want to spend too much time on any one question.
