Evocative rendering

With all the characteristic displacement of modern story-telling, Calasso's narration of myth seems, in its somewhat clumsy organization, a botched effort. However, it is a sensual and engaging interpretation of ancient Indian myth, and it survives on its strength as an personal interpretation and not a powerful invocation of a country's mythic past. As a raconteur, his ability to "feel" and convey Sukanya's longing, Shiva's maverick personality, or Krishna's eternal homesickness for Gokul, was something I never felt as poignantly before while reading Indian writing of myths. I can only remember my grandfather's narration of the story of Bhisma and Hidimba as evocative as any myth in "Ka". I think it is, overall, an amazing research and re-interpretation. He seems to "reveal," in a Heideggerean sense, the nature of myth through his own experience.

KA........the middle syllable

highly interesting...........hats off to calasso, for interpreting sanyathan dharma, while preserving it's authenticity. Some parts of the book, can be very complicated, for people not familiar with sanyathan dharma, but remember this......the whole dharma, is based on what our rsis (seers) saw within their own body. The chapter on Prajapati, is well explained. Compare it to your own mind, remembering the dharma's basis, that we are a microcosm of the entire universe, and that all it's secrets, can be found within us. Thank-you calasso and parks, for a wonderful book.

In the manner of Marriage of Cadmus and Harmony, Ka is an exposition of the inner meaning of Indian mythology, theology. It has a brilliance that comes directly from what Roberto Calasso writes about. In our world that has so little understanding of what the ancient world was, reading Calasso is an inspiration. I will start with saying that I will be updating this review this week as i undertake it. On day one, the facts are these...I weighed in at 253.8 pounds, also, I am 46 years old. I have the veggie soup on the stove and bowls of orange slices, grapes, and pears at my elbow. I will be supplementing this with starting the P90X workout.

The book begins as a 5 star book based on the simple presentation and well organized layout. Keeping the starts will be predicated on results and I will be following this program religiously. Wish me luck.

As day 3 begins, I must say that day two was the most difficult. The soup--which was so enjoyable on day one--becomes almost like a punishment. Also, the selection of fruits on day one was more varied and enjoyable. There seems to be a lack of enjoyable AND tasty raw veggies. (At least in my opinion.) However, my weight this morning on the start of day 3 is 246.6 (7.2 pounds).

No fan of dieting, this was endurable. You don't go hungry, but if you are a fan of food, then you start craving just about everything. However, on the plus side, you can find some creative preparations for veggies that you will carry over. The secret is to eat sensible after and use that initial drop in weight to springboard you into healthier eating habits. My final weigh in was 243.3. (10.5 pounds)

Keep your allies close.

Game of Thrones told a story of political intrigue, where characters feared to act openly. In Clash of Kings the war has begun. Nine characters share their perspectives on the story, but this time the characters are spread out across seven locations, and in the case of three characters their locations change frequently. Fortunately most of the chapters either revolve around King’s Landing and the political sibling rivalry between Tyrion and Cersei, or the Starks, and their efforts to forge alliances and rally others to their cause.
True to form the author lingers on the harsh realities of war; how many must fight and die for the sake of 4 men, how cold and cruel the allies of each army can be, and how quickly the tide can turn. With so many powers in play a plan can work perfectly one day only to founder on the next, triggering waves of desertion and defection.
Chapters frequently end on a cliffhanger, but I would suggest treating each chapter as its own short story. At times it can be a bit much to keep all the stories straight, some only have 5-6 chapters out of 70. For those that like a challenge, or a complex network of political plots and relationships, this will be a good dense read. If you want something to read before bed, this may not be for you.

Richly developed

The War of the Five Kings finally breaks out in Westeros, while further threats develop north of the Wall and in the lands to the east.

George R.R. Martin has created such a richly developed world and peopled it with well-developed characters. They run the gamut from those I admire and worry about (like Jon and Arya Stark) to those I detest (like King Joffrey) to the many fascinating characters painted in varying shades of grey (like Tyrion and Daenerys). I just love these epics in which a meticulously detailed world is thrown into chaos and so far, just two books in, A Song of Ice and Fire looks to be a classic of the genre. It’s wonderful, though rare, to find a case where all the hype hasn’t raised expectations that can’t be met.

Continues a huge and emotionally intense story. Some of the very best in all of fantasy literature.

This second volume in the Song of Ice and Fire is every bit as good as the first, A Game of Thrones. Picking up where the first book left off, this one continues the heart-rending and intense journey of some of my favorite characters in all of fantasy literature. Martin is undeniably one of the most skillful writers when it comes to character development, and the directions some of his characters take in this book will surprise you. With much of the world-building having been accomplished in the first book, this one provides even more action, with some of the most intense scenes I've ever read. Even though it is a long book, I didn't want it to end, and can hardly wait to read the next.

One of my favorite things about this series is the incredibly detailed world that it takes place in. It is so easy to get pulled into this setting, with its rich history and well-developed geography and climate. The detailed (and maybe overwhelming) noble houses and lineages going back generations help bring the world to life and set the readers perspective as to the past and present. Many times while reading this book, I found myself flipping back to the detailed map (and wishing there was one of the Eastern continent) as I just wanted to know as much as I could about exactly where each event was taking place and where it was in relations to other places. Martin's land of Westeros is huge, and the map is detailed, but it isn't wasted space, as events in this book take place all over the entire land.

While most of the POV characters in this one are the same as in the first book (with the exception of Davos Seaworth and a couple of others), they continue to develop here. You'll find yourself changing your mind about characters as you learn more about their motivations and capabilities. At least for me, some of my favorite characters in the first book turned into my least favorite here, and some I despised in the first book became some of my favorites. I thought Theon Greyjoy would be an excellent character, but here he develops into something terrible. Meanwhile, Tyrion Lannister has quickly become one of my favorite characters I've read about in any book.

Martin's use of POV for different characters really works well in this series. Learning about the land and getting unique view of events through the eyes of disparate characters allows for a lot of freedom and opportunities that Martin takes full advantage of. Some reviewers have complained about the nonlinear feel of the story, jumping around between characters and leaving the reader with awful cliffhangers and a mad desire to keep reading from the current point of view. While it is frustrating at times, it is a good sort of frustrating, and meant as a tease to keep you frantically turning pages to get back to that characters next section and see what happens. But, as you start reading about the next character, you realize that you'd just as soon stick with that one than go back to the last one. And, with a tale this big (and I mean HUGE), you absolutely have to jump between storylines frequently, and in my opinion Martin does it almost flawlessly.

The action is this second book is certainly more intense than the previous. The battle for King's Landing in particular is out of this world, with alchemist fire, dwarf-men leading charges, and devastation and destruction run rampant. Overall though, it is still the intensity of emotion that drives this story. Characters that you love are put through some of the most unimaginable ordeals and you can't help being scared for them, as Martin has already shown us his willingness to kill off nearly anyone. You'll find yourself laughing with the characters when things go wrong, but dreading to turn the page when you fell upcoming doom.

Get dragged into this story and you won't be sorry. That is unless you finish the most recent book and the series isn't done yet.. This is my second time through, and I now realize I'll end up with the same frustrating feeling of not being able to finish the story because Martin takes so awfully long to publish these books. They are worth the torment though. Most highly recommended!
