From a Former Student- This One Comes Highly Recommended!

Tindall and Shi's "America", offers an insightful glimpse into U.S.history from colonial to modern (eighth edition ends with the election of President Obama) times. "Shindle" explicates history in a very complementary fashion, filled with useful graphics (often political cartoons w.captions)，and a 'chapter summery' tying together key dates/facts/concepts. This, in addition to a plethora of online resources available, makes the textbook straightforward in terms of tests/quiz preparation. The language used is consistent, and the chapters are divided up fairly evenly. Expect roughly 30-40 pages per chapter-
Tindall and Shi do a fantastic job of making the content easy-to-understand, yet interesting. As noted, the authors do maintain a neutral tone which allows the student to draw analytical connections. However, "Shindle" will occasionally be quite witty- resulting in some "ah ha!" moments here and there. The text dives into the causes, (and arguably most importantly) the consequences, of key socio-political, and economical events. Overall, I think the text is an excellent way to learn about America past and present. When completed in-depth, I think the book will advance a student's ability to critically think (whether you are an advanced high school or a college student).
Something I will point out, however, is that throughout a chapter, events won't necessarily be in total chronological order. "Shindle" will often bring up a point, reference to a past example, and then continue onwards. Additionally, though the pacing is very consistent- I did feel that some chapters could have been explicated further, and some parts condensed. However, supplementary readings (1st, 2nd, 3rd person documents provided by an instructor) will cover the aforementioned gaps. This is why some reviewers call this one a "framework textbook".
This useful text can be purchased as a thick 1-volume copy or a 2 volume set. I would strongly recommend getting the 2-volume set. This is because carrying it around is much more manageable. Seeing that as a popular textbook and the price is low- I would also purchase because annotations/highlights are much easier to accomplish.
Overall, Tindall and Shi's "America: A Narrative History (Eighth Edition)“ comes highly recommended from this former student!

This book was well written. My son used it for school. I felt it was a bit pricey and after I purchased this item I found it in local book store for a cheaper price.
